Some people do not advise amateurs to attempt
repairs themselves. A good many books are spoilt through people trying to
effect bodged repairs because they either don’t know what materials to use,
or how to obtain them. However, there are also those who feel that there is
nothing wrong with people doing it for themselves on their own books, if they
know how to do it more or less properly, using proper materials. In addition
archivists working alone for small organisations may know what they are
supposed to do, but do not have access to the resources of large-scale
organisations. The DIY section on this page is intended for these sorts of
