Wood

Wood has long been one of the major items to be found in skips. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Some local council’s accept wood for turning into wood chips; and sometimes that might be the best thing to do with a mangled piece of wood. In some instances there may also be the possibility of burning the wood to provide heating. However, a good deal of wood or lumber lying around in skips or turned into woodchips would still be perfectly usable. Further more, wood can be expensive to purchase new. Besides which some rarer types of wood, such as teak can be difficult and expensive to obtain from sustainable sources.

Rare Or hard to obtain woods - (if you know what you’ve got) – Heritage organisations, may be interested in acquiring spare wood as they can utilise it in their restoration work. For example Heritage Railways trying to restore historic railway carriages could make use of used but still usable wood.

Useable But not necessarily Rare Wood – Community wood recycling projects are now coming into being

Seems Like Junk – Old Railway Sleepers, and various other apparently junk wood, is frequently used by people building allotments, and other odd little projects. It may be worth passing such wood on to a wood recycling or reuse project. Although another option is Freecycle.
