White Goods

Cookers, Fridges, Freezers, Washing Machines, and, Dishwashers, if you are revamping your kitchen and they still work reasonably well, is it worth trying to pass them on to someone who needs them? The answer is very probably yes. Of course sometimes you have an old cooker that no longer works at all well, in which case sending it to the dump is probably the answer, but there are certainly instances where such items could be useful. The same applies to heaters, and microwaves. Plus of course kettles, toasters, irons, landline telephones etc. Of course there is the problem that older electrical items will not conform to modern safety standards. There is also the problem that many organisations can’t take items that need safety checking. However, you are usually allowed to exchange such items on a person to person bases. It may be possible to sell such items on an auction site such as Ebay. The more usual route tends to be community groups such as Freecycle and Gumtree. There are also some charities who may accept such goods, but usually only if the goods are not too ancient.

Nearly New White Goods  - A suitable charity, helping people to set up home is worth considering. Selling on an auction site may be possible, although with larger goods there is the problem of getting them moved. It may be worth consulting with a firm who would do the auctioning for you.

Well Used But With Quite A Bit Of Life In Them – A suitable charity may be worth trying. However in this instance a community group such as Freegle, Freecycle or Gumtree is probably the best bet.

Still Working, But Non Too Good – It may be worth trying a community group such as Freegle, Freecycle or Gumtree, but if the faults are sufficiently bad as to be your reason for getting rid of the items, it may be best to consider the dump, especially if the faults bring the item’s safety into account? If however, the item has some vintage value it may conceivably be possible for a very competent person to repair it. In which case you may want to make enquiries with a suitable museum or some such. However more most ordinary items it’s probably not worth trying too hard.

Poor Condition/Not Working – The dump is really the only answer, although if the item has some sort of vintage worth it may be possible to enquire if an appropriate museum or heritage organisation might like it, but for most general items it has to be the dump.
