TV, Video & DVD Players

You might not like your old Television, but if it is working there is a good chance there is someone who will. Likewise you might think a video player is obsolete, but there are people who still use them. Even if these things are not working, in some instances the item may be repairable, or useful to someone for spare parts.

It should be noted that the majority of Charity Shops and Give-And-Take Days often can’t accept electrical goods, because of the safety regulations, there being a shortage of qualified electrical safety testers willing to undertake work for nothing. However it is permitted to dispose of electrical items on a person to person basis, such as via Freegle and Ebay, because the contract is between two individuals and the giver or seller is in theory liable if the item is dangerous.

If using Ebay you do not have to do the selling yourself, you can use a selling agent, which may be particularly useful when dealing with bulky items that are difficult to pack up for posting.

TV Sets With No Scart – These older TV sets without a scart lead are much less useful as they are not so easy to connect to modern peripherals such as video recorders, let alone DVD players or set top boxes. However, at present it is possible to some extent and therefore there is some demand for these on Ebay. If selling on Ebay it is definitely worth using a firm to do the selling for you in this instance. You can also consider offering these on Freegle or Freecyle, but do make sure you specify that it has no scart.

TV Sets With Scart Socket – These are much easier to set up. There may be some demand for these on Ebay. There is often a demand on Freecycle. However, TV’s can be heavy, and the people wanting them on Freegle and Freecycle do not always have adequate transport, which can be a little problematic (especially if you are time-restricted in your clearing out).

Video Recorder – If in working condition it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay, although unless you have the original box, if selling on Ebay it may be preferable to use an intermediary firm. There is also often a demand on community organisations such as Freecyle (and if using a community organisation you do not make any money, but you also do not have the problem of packing it up). If the machine is not working there are fewer options. If the machine has only recently developed a fault, then it may be worth offering on Freegle or Freecycle, to see if someone is willing to have it repaired; but do make sure you state in your posting that it is not working.. However, there comes a point where the repairs become difficult, costly, and not lasting, in which case unless some enterprising person wants it for spares, there is no help for it but the dump.

DVD Player - If in working condition it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay, although unless you have the original box, if selling on Ebay it may be preferable to use an intermediary firm. There is also often a demand on community organisations such as Freegle (and if using Freecyle you do not make any money, but you also do not have the problem of packing it up). If the machine is not working it may still be worth offering on Freegle or some such, as someone may be interested in having it and getting it mended. Although if that is the case, do make sure you state that it is not working.

DVD Player/Recorder - If in working condition it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay, although unless you have the original box, if selling on Ebay it may be preferable to use an intermediary firm. Combies (Video-DVD)  - If in working condition it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay, although unless you have the original box, if selling on Ebay it may be preferable to use an intermediary firm. There is also often a demand on community organisations such as Freegle (and if using Freegle or Freecyle you do not make any money, but you also do not have the problem of packing it up). Although if that is the case, do make sure you state that it is not working.

Cine Camera – Working or not, as long as you state it as best you know, it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay. Although there is the matter of packaging it up. There is also some demand on Freegle and Freecycle, amongst cine enthusiasts.

Video Camera – If the camera is fairly newish (using modern tapes) then it may be worth trying to sell on Ebay, although unless you have the original box, if selling on Ebay it may be preferable to use an intermediary firm. With older cameras, if good, Ebay could also be worth a try, as some people would be willing to pay money for an older non-digital model, r you might prefer to offer on a community forum such Freegle, Freecycle or Gumtree. If an older video camera is not working, but you think it could be repairable (i.e. the fault is a recent one where repair has not been attempted before) then it could be worth offering on a community organisation such as Freegle, as long as you make it clear that is needs repairs. Wherever you offer it, it is worth including in your listing the make and the exact model number is possible, as sometimes people might search for a particular model of camcorder (as a replacement for one they already had, one that is the same as a friend’s or some such).
