Hi Fi
Sound systems, redundant radios, record players, Cassette players, CD Players, and soon ipods, probably make up a good deal of landfill, for two major reasons, upgrading to newer models that are perhaps more compact or have newer features, or replacing it because its only partially working. One answer to the latter of course is to actually get it repaired, but sometimes the repair is not economical, and sometime a breakdown seems like a good excuse to replace.
It should be noted that the majority of Charity Shops and Give-And-Take Days often can’t accept electrical goods, because of the safety regulations, there being a shortage of qualified electrical safety testers willing to undertake work for nothing. However it is permitted to dispose of electrical items on a person to person basis, such as via Freegle, Freecycle and Ebay, because the contract is between two individuals and the giver or seller is in theory liable if the item is dangerous.
If using Ebay you do not have to do the selling yourself, you can use a selling agent, which may be particularly useful when dealing with bulky items that are difficult to pack up for posting.
If the item is a hi fi unit (of several components) only some of which work, or possibly (if sufficiently unusual) none of it works, it may still be possible to get rid of it on Ebay or Freegle, Freecycle or Gumtree (either for parts, or to someone who wants to try and get it mended, or in the case of partially working items is happy with the bits that do work) as long as it is clearly stated what works and what does not.

Record Players – If a machine is particularly old, then it may be possible to find a home for it amongst enthusiasts for ancient hi fi. Otherwise, there is often a demand for working record decks on organisations such as Freegle or Freecycle.
Radios – If a machine is particularly old, then it may be possible to find a home for it amongst enthusiasts for ancient hi fi. Otherwise, there is sometimes a demand for working radios on organisations such as Freegle or Freecycle.
Cassette Players – There is often a demand for working cassette decks on Freegle and Freecycle. If the machine has twin decks, it may be helpful to specify if both decks work, and whether both will work simultaneously (on some twin cassette machines once they get older although both decks still function individually they stop functioning well when used together).
CD Players – There is sometimes a demand for working ones on Freegle and Freecyle.
Ipods – There are people out there who collect broken Ipods to try and restore them.
