Cardboard Boxes

The rise of mail order shopping, particularly via the internet has seen a rise in the use of cardboard boxes and packaging to send goods through the post or by courier. However, it does not just have to be piled up as waste cluttering up the home.

Boxes That Can Be Reused – Many of the cardboard boxes, particularly newish ones, of reasonable dimensions can be reused. Perhaps to store stuff within the home, or as a repositary. Even the slightly tattier ones may, with care, hold together long enough to be used for removing junk in. Even strong rectangular boxes favoured by many charity Christmas catalogues may be useful for storing wrapping paper, Christmas decorations, blankets, or children’s drawings. Empty boxes can often be stored one inside the other. However, sometimes one really does end up with too many cardboard boxes. In which case, try offering them on community sites such as Freegle or Freecycle. There are frequently people there who need boxes for moving house. Sometimes there are also people needing small boxes for their own small mail order businesses.

Boxes That Can’t Be reused – Very very flat shaped cardboard packaging (such as that preferred by Amazon amongst others), as well as boxes that have evidently been reused a few too many times (in some cases quite cleverly by means of cutting down to size) are not so suitable for reuse. However, once any packaging has been removed from inside them they can be collapsed (often with the aid of a Stanley knife) and recycled as cardboard recycling. Local councils often have facilities for cardboard collection (although in many instances it does have to be taken to the nearest recycling centre.
